Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) is a plant native to the Pacific Islands — Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, Samoa, and Hawaii — where it has been cultivated and consumed as a ceremonial and social beverage for over 3,000 years. The root of the kava plant contains kavalactones (including kavain, dihydrokavain, and methysticin) that have been extensively studied for their anxiolytic, muscle-relaxing, and sleep-supporting properties.
Unlike many botanical supplements, kava’s effects are well-documented in clinical research: multiple systematic reviews confirm that kava root extract produces significant reductions in anxiety scores compared to placebo, with a favorable safety profile when consumed in traditional water-based preparations from root-only material.
Our Kava Kava is sourced from traditional “noble” kava cultivars of the Pacific Islands — varieties selected over generations for their kavalactone content and balanced alkaloid profiles. Root-only material (not stem or leaves, which have different alkaloid profiles).
Traditionally prepared as a cold-water infusion: knead the root material in a cloth bag in cold water for 10–15 minutes, strain, and drink the resulting liquid (called grog). Not recommended with alcohol or benzodiazepines.
